Abstract:

Photographs relating to the life and career of Roscoe R. Hill, pertaining primarily to his work as an historian and archivist of Latin America. Included are photos from his college days at Eureka, Illinois, portraits and a few family snapshots, and an album of various California snapshots including Stanford University, the University of California, and the Chinese fishing village in Monterey (about 1900). Numerous views of Latin America, Spain, and some of Portugal are present, as well as a few views of various national archives inluding those of Cuba, Brazil, and Argentina, and the Archives of the Indies in Seville, Spain. Box 1: photographs related to Hill's professional life including interior photographs Archives of the Indies in Seville, about 1911-1913, snapshots in Spain and Portugal, archives buildings in several Latin American countries, a few views of dams or power plants (probably related to the Third World Power Conference, 1936), group portraits and event photographs, and portraits of colleagues or associates. -- Box 2: several hundred foreign snapshots, chiefly poor in quality, of Spain, Latin America and probably Portugal (about 1900-1915), postcards of the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, postcards from France and miscellaneous European locations, a few snapshots from Latin America (including Guatemala, Nicaragua, Cuba, and unidentified locations), 18 stereographs from Nicaragua (from the Instituto Pedagógico de Varones), postcards of Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Argentina and elsewhere, and postcards from New York and New Mexico. -- Box 3: Portraits of the Eureka College Class of 1900, a snapshot album of California scenes (about 1900), and oversize scenes (Torre de Oro and 1 unidentified Latin American plaza crowd scene), oversize group portraits, oversize portraits of Hill and others, a portrait sketch of Hill while at the Archives of the Indies in 1913, and the exterior of the Hill home, Mackinaw, Illinois (1880s?). -- Box 4: personal and family snapshots and portraits of Hill from young adulthood and throughout his career. Glass negatives are portrait negatives of Hill.

Roscoe R. Hill (1880-1960) was an historian, Latin Americanist, teacher, editor, diplomat, and archivist. A 1900 graduate of Eureka College, Illinois, his graduate studies were at the University of Chicago and Columbia University. In 1911-1913, Hill worked for the Research Division of the Carnegie Institute at the Archives of the Indies in Seville, Spain. For two years he was President of the Spanish-American Normal School of New Mexico, then was a regional economist for Latin America with the Foreign Trade Division of the Department of State. He was Commissioner on the Nicaraguan High Commission, 1920-1928, and a member of the Nicaraguan War Claims commission. He was the Library of Congress's Director for Spain of their European Mission, and served as an archivist in the Library of Congress and the National Archives in the Division of Classification and then as chief of the Division of State Department Archives.
